Monster of the Day #3138

I’m sure some of you know this story, but I’d never heard of it. Nezura was meant to Daiei’s entry into the Kaiju market then at a peak due to (obviously) Toho. The film was going to be about giant rats, which probably isn’t that surprising to you given the still image above. The production, however, was a disaster. I guess they thought the trainable domesticated rats didn’t look scary enough, so they got the bright idea to capture and use zillions of actual sewer rats. So the feral rats ran around infesting the neighborhood, had trillions of kids, bit people and were themselves infested with fleas and ticks. Things got so bad that they literally had to burn down the production building because it was overtaken by the bugs. Still, the abandonment of the project led to Gamera, so that’s pretty good.

They are actually making a movie about this, but it looked kind of flat and cheap to me (from the trailer). Still, a fascinating story.

I’d never heard about it until I picked up the Gamera set. When the health department shuts down your movie it’s a sad thing.

    Turtles > rats…

Although when I first looked at the MotD on my small phone screen my first thought was capybaras!?! A movie with Brazilian fitness models fighting an army of killer capybaras- that I would watch!

  • Has there ever been an honest to God good giant rat film, or is that like the Bigfoot Movies and a lost cause? Closest I can come up with is maybe Deadly Eyes, but its been at least twenty years since I saw it. Food of the Gods, maybe? If you want to stretch the word “good”? It sounds like an opportunity in the making for film makers, more so than failing at topping Them for the thousandth time.

The really sad thing is, they shot some test footage but it was destroyed a few years ago over concerns of animal cruelty. One wonders what they could have pasted together using the footage they’d shot. Had there been enough to work into a picture mixed with new footage shot period style it could’ve produced an interesting picture. Alas, we’ll never know.

Me, I just wonder how many jokes could be made about the picture with the young lovely surrounded by all those [insert name of disliked profession here].

Really though it does look like it would have made a trippy movie. Though a documentary about the shooting might be just as entertaining.

I don’t know, I can think of some movies I’ve seen that deserved to be shut down by the health department on charges of criminal amounts of bad taste.
